A veterinary
dermatologist is a licensed veterinarian who has extensive training
in the discipline of dermatology and who has been board certified
by the American College of Veterinary
Dermatology (ACVD).

Veterinary
dermatologists diagnose and treat cats and dogs with benign and
malignant disorders of the skin, mouth, hair, and nails. These specialists
have expertise in a variety of advanced diagnostic testing procedures
which may include performing microscopic examinations of skin biopsy
specimens, allergy tests, cytological smears, potassium hydroxide
preparations, fungal cultures and other microbiological examinations
of skin scrapings and secretions. Dermatological
treatment methods such as crysosurgery, laser surgery, nail surgery,
excisional surgery, biopsy techniques, and externally applied or
injected medications may be used to resolve the following ailments:
- Infectious
or Non-Infectious Skin Disease: Yeast or bacterial infections
- Parasitic
Skin Disease:
skin mites, demodex mange, and scabies
- Autoimmune
Diseases:
Systemic lupus, erythematous, and pemigous
- Allergy
and Allergy-Induced Skin Diseases: Internal malignanacy and
hepatocutaneous syndrome
