CRITICAL CARE

Dr. Oncken obtained a Bachelor of Science in Zoology and her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) from Washington State University. From there, she completed a small animal rotating internship at Alameda East Veterinary Hospital in Denver, Colorado, and had the opportunity to be a part of the very first season of Emergency Vets. She practiced emergency medicine in Boulder, Colorado for a year before completing a three year residency in Emergency and Critical Care Medicine at the Animal Emergency Center in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Dr. Oncken’s research focused on hypothermia in the critically ill patient, for which she obtained board certification in 2001.

Dr. Oncken’s specialties include emergency surgery, trauma care, ventilator medicine, and specialty training in continuous renal replacement therapy. In addition to her specialty work, she lectures at veterinary conferences on emergency and critical care topics throughout the United States. She annually teaches the emergency and critical care course at Oregon State University Veterinary School.

Dr. Oncken spent eight years (6 of which she acted as the medical director) at DoveLewis Emergency Animal Hospital in Portland, Oregon. In September of 2009, Dr. Oncken moved to Boise to direct the ICU and emergency services at WestVet. She lives with her two dogs, Khobi and Brie. She enjoys camping, hiking, running, live music, and skiing.
